Mumma Review

I just love The Bush Bakery!  Situated in Leslie Vale, roughly a 20 minute drive south of Hobart or via the scenic route around Fern Tree, the Bush Bakery resides in a shed (albeit a very clean and modern appearing shed!) adjacent to the family home of the owners and bakers themselves.  My hubby and I have been going to the Bakery for years and now enjoy taking our Great Man there for a bit of a family drive and spot of lunch - often eaten at the river opposite the Longley Pub!  If you fancy eating your goodies ASAP there is a small seated area under a wooden shelter on the grounds of the Bakery as well as picturesque scenery to match.

The Bakery sell a variety of tasty pie options (hot for your picking or sold in cold packs in the fridge to enjoy at home) with our picks often being a Sheppard's Pie; Bacon & Egg; or Curried Chicken....yum!  

But my eyes are always drawn instantly to the cakes.....yummy, yummy!  They sell cakes individually as well as in half dozen packs and stock a plethora of home-made goodies including carrot cakes; chocolate cakes; danishes; fruit strudels; fruit tarts; caramel or peppermint slice; kiss biscuits; anzac's.....the list goes on!  

But my favourite without a doubt is their French Vanilla Slice - honestly it has got to be one of the best around!  With deliciously light, flaky pastry; smooth custard and oh just right icing it really is simply delicious.  In addition to that we enjoy their famous chocolate mousse truffles - for around $1 each they are a true little delight and finish off a meal (albeit a pie meal) very nicely!  

One of Tassie's best kept secrets The Bush Bakery is certainly unique and a terrific place to head to for a weekend or weekday drive with the family :)

Mumma Review:

"Oooh, this looks nice" I thought, as I entered Cultura with my baby girl in the pram, and my 2yo holding my hand.  We were on our way to meet my grandparents for lunch.  Automatic doors meant no wrestling with the door and no struggling to ram a wide pram through it.  Off to a good start.

We joined my grandparents and said our hello's, before a waiter promptly took our coffee orders.  There were no highchairs for bub, but we were able to set ourselves up at the table with the pram without any hassles.  The wait staff were all really friendly, and most of them stopped to coo at the baby or chat with the toddler.  When my little man enquired "you got marshmallows?" the waitress checked if it was ok for him to have some, then bought out his babychino with not one, not two, but three marshmallows!  A treat indeed.

My hopes for a civilised lunch disappeared before the coffee even arrived (despite the quick service!)  A spilled babycino, followed by a mouthful of spurted water from the toddler who was unable to stifle a laugh while drinking, ensured that the table quickly looked a soggy mess. Baby girl started to loudly complain that she would like her lunch please, so I dug around in my bag for a bib, found one with a stretchy head hole (as opposed to one that fastens around the neck) then proceeded to simultaneously nearly rip her ears off and snap her neck as I attempted to hastily ram it over her head.  "Maybe put that one away for the next baby" my grandmother gently suggested.  

Once fed she was still pretty unhappy, so I quietened her with a quick milk feed.  While this was going on our lunch arrived, and my toddler was extremely displeased to find that he would be sharing with me, and did not have his very own plate thankyou very much.  My grandmother stepped in to do what only grandmothers are allowed to do... order him a bowl of icecream for lunch instead.

The toddler seemed pleased, the baby was fed... maybe I could enjoy my lunch now? Oh no.  Baby girl was happy for the merest of moments before really starting to roar.  Come to think of it, she was looking extremely tired, so I thought maybe if I put her in her pram and just take her for a little walk she would drop of, then I could come back and enjoy my lunch?  Yes, thats what I will do....I got as far as the front door before I heard Muuummmmyyy! and turned around to find a tearful little boy who had no intention of letting my carry out that plan.  Bugger.

Back to the table.  I held one child on my knee while he got stuck back into his ice cream, used the other hand to jiggle the pram about on the spot til the baby stopped roaring and fell asleep, all the while trying to smile pleasantly, act like there was nothing wrong, and that I was thoroughly enjoying the lunch that my grandparents were so kindly taking me out for.  I managed to snap a couple of quick pics, but this one of the little man tucking into his icecream while sitting on my knee was the only one that was even close to usable.

I did eventually manage to eat my roast vegetable risotto... Delicious, but stone cold by that stage.  Perhaps I'll head back here during baby free time!  

So I'm sorry to say that this is not much of a review for poor old Cultura, just a story of my failed luncheon....come on, who hasn't had one of those?! Share, and make me feel better :)

Nicolatte

Mumma Review

A ridiculously early appointment in the city had me dragging two children out of bed, into their warmest gear and into the car on a chilly Hobart morning.  2 degrees according to the mercury, with the Bridgewater Jerry descending on us as we arrived - anyone from Hobart knows just how cold that is!

Warming up with a hot cup of coffee was an essential requirement once our appointment was done with, so we popped into Nicolatte in Wellington Court before heading back to the car park.

I often bypass this cafe when I'm in town as the three steep steps up to the door with the pram is a bit of a hassle, but I braved it today as I knew the toys inside were worth backing up and hoiking the pram up those steps, giving baby girl a bouncy ride!  Once inside little mister spotted the toys lining the window ledge and made a bee line straight to them.  He then kept himself busy for the entire time, cooking with the play food.  So busy was he that when his babycino arrived it slowly grew cold, deflated and sad looking while he only occasionally looked up from the toys to offer me a piece of wooden toast.

I can't rave about the wooden toast on offer, but the date scone and coffee were both delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed over a complimentary newspaper, while baby girl slept in her pram.  I couldn't believe my luck!

There isn't a lot of room inside the cafe for prams, but it is do-able if you are able to get a spot near the door.  It's probably more of a great spot for a coffee once the pram days are over.  However when I was leaving, the lady behind the counter came over to help me carry the pram back down the stairs which was nice.

Apparently Nicolatte and the tiny Ephah Cafe across the court yard are run by the same people.  Al and I can often be seen outside Ephah on a work day enjoying a "No. 2 toasted focaccia" and coffee in our lunch break!  Definitely a favourite!  I've eaten at Nicolatte a few times in the past too, and enjoyed the food.  Their all day breakfast menu is a winner in my opinion!

The babycino was a winner too.  Once my little man finally got around to drinking it he was pretty delighted to find a huge marshmallow in the bottom of the cup!  

I might have stayed there all day, especially since the little guy hadn't even spotted the kiddies couch with toys and books to explore, but the sudden demand of a toddlers bladder had us scooting off in search of some loo's.  Never mind, we will be back another day!

I've never tried their wood-fired pizza's.  Anyone got any recommendations?

Mumma Review

The grand master, his aunty (on a special visit down from Melbourne) and I headed to Tricycle Cafe in Salamanca for a stroll and a spot of delicious brunch last Saturday morning.  I have been trying to get to Tricycle lately for a latte and their yummy eggs however as they don't take weekend bookings it is a bit hit and miss with the pram to be able to secure a good seat (or a seat at all it is so popular!).  We were in luck on this morning as we waited less than 5 minutes and secured a seat just outside the entrance of the cafe  - right outside in fact of A Common Ground were we could see the Gourmet Farmer, Mathew Evans, busy at work :)

Tricycle Cafe is a quirky yet trendy cafe housed in the foyer of the Peacock Theatre in the Salamanca Arts Centre.  Tricycle bikes adorn walls as well as a few scattered in and around the foyer (an awesome sight for my bike mad little one!).  There is a mixture of tables seating 2-6 people in and around the raised foyer as well as some inside the actual cafe 'proper' section and always a few outside in Salamanca.  The cafe is essentially always packed as it is a popular destination for coffee, brunch, lunch and freshly baked sweat treats.

On this day we were all feeling like eggs.....I enjoyed their scrambled eggs on sourdough, silky smooth and cooked to perfection, with a side of Ziggy's bacon.  My sis enjoyed the baked eggs with sourdough - they certainly got her tick of approval (often a hard thing to get!).  My little man enjoyed a helping of eggs all washed down nicely with a babycino :)  The lattes (one soy) hit the spot perfectly and as Tricycle has a reputation of having some of the best (if not the best) coffees in Hobart they did not let us down ......mmmm I want one now!   

Tricycle Cafe doesn't really need any specific kid friendly features - the trikes themselves are certainly more than a draw card in my opinion!  As well as admiring the trikes my little man enjoyed walking (and at times running till caught) up and down the arcade, stopping intermittently to admire the toy Giraffe at The Maker.  Staff were friendly and service efficient as we were able to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere (or at least attempt to in between catching my curious man and assisting with helping of eggs, toast and monitoring babycino spillage!).  

Tricycle Cafe is a destination in itself but coupled with a stroll through Salamanca Market certainly makes for a very pleasant morning :)

Pizzarazzi

Adult menu: The pizza menu comprises of a "B list" (all your usual suspects like margarita, hawaiian, capricossa, supreme, bbq chicken etc) and an "A list" with some more unusual offerings such as poached pear, notorious fig, arabian chicken, scotch fillet steak, lamb tikka masala, salt and pepper calamari (yes they are all pizza's)

Prices: "B list" $11  "A list" $13, cheap!  The pizza is a decent size for this price, I only managed half of mine.  It's a little more expensive for the take-away option, but the sizing is different, check out their website for the full take-away menu and prices. 

Mumma Review

Having heard that the recently opened Pizzarazzi was a good child friendly option, hubby and I thought we would try it out on an early Friday evening.

When we got there we discovered that there were no highchairs, no change table, no toys, no kids menu....it didn't look promising.

We propped our toddler up at the table on the "big boy chair" which he is now only just big enough to do.  Had it been a few months earlier it would have been a bit of a nightmare trying to keep him contained.  

The place was empty at our 5.30pm dining time so service was prompt and efficient, and our waitress single-handedly created a child friendly vibe, and turned around our initial dubious first impressions of the place.  She was extremely attentive towards our little guy, and went to length to make him, and us, feel welcomed.  She rustled him up a white paper bag and pen to draw with, paid him lots of attention and compliments and completely won him over when at the end of the meal she asked if she could "please make him a babycino"!  For her efforts she earned herself a big cuddle and kiss from our sticky pawed toddler.

Despite there being no kids menu, there are plenty of pizza options suitable for sharing with the family.  We chose a garlic pizza, and capriscossa which hubby and bubba both loved, and ate themselves beyond full.  I chose a nacho libre pizza with jalapeno's - certainly not something I would normally choose, I've got to put that one down to a pregnancy craving, but I loved it! 

At the end of our meal we were pretty happy that we had chosen Pizzarazzi for our dinner. Hopefully the guys that run the place will listen to our waitresses suggestions for a few child friendly features.  I would be willing to try this place again in a few months time to see if they have added some kid friendly features and grabbed a slice of the early family diners trade.  And if not the pizza is worth a return visit for anyway!

Mumma Review

Brunch was again the order of the day and this time we headed to Island Espresso on Elizabeth Street.  We were keen to sample their goodies after hearing on the good old Hobart grape-vine that it was a good inner-city child friendly cafe.  We arrived not long after 9am and the place was already busy will inner-city workers enjoying breakfast and coffees, as well as patrons keen for a take-away caffeine fix. 

There are numerous seating options - down and upstairs seating with both tables/chairs and some comfy couches on each floor plus a cute retro courtyard out the back.  Pram access is good but both doors did need to be opened into the cafe - opened today promptly by a friendly staff member.  Once inside, there is room for a couple of prams at a table, but not much more.

Service was friendly and efficient and the staff are accommodating towards little ones.  We  were discretely asked if a marshmallow was allowed with the babycino, which is always nice and much appreciated.  A tasty eggs benedict (loaded with fresh rocket which made it seem slightly healthier) and a delicious french toast with poached peppered pears and mascapone (enjoyed by one pregnant Mumma Kel) were enjoyed while our friend opted for the healthy choice of fruit toast.  The coffee's were smooth and satisfying. 

Mumma Kel's little boy was kept amused with the toys on offer; colouring in books and pencils, and a toy coffee machine with which he busily set to the task of making everyone at our table a drink.

Island Espresso is however one of those places where as long as little people are strapped into a pram, highchair, or sitting still at the table all is well, but as soon as they try to venture off there are lots of little objects and hazards dotted around, particularly the steep stairs.  Even the most well behaved toddler can have a moment like this:  "Yes, I am sitting up at the table nice and neatly...but I just might swap chairs.  Oh, what's this?  A fire poker!"

Island Espresso was a great spot for brunch and is in a convenient location close to the CBD.  Whilst they were friendly and accommodating to us with kids it does have a few hazards (steep stairs without a rail, fire place with poker, books and goodies in baskets all within toddler eye level/reach) but if you can manage to distract your little ones from wanting to explore these exciting objects then it is a great find.

Mumma Review

Taste Cafe is housed inside the Baha'i Centre of Learning, the environmentally sustainable, round building on the edge of the city.  We arrived on a weekday morning, for a catch up and a cuppa.  As soon as we walked in the door we were informed that there's a kids play room that we could use if we liked.  Our boys are a little too little to be left to play together unsupervised (the mind boogles at the trouble they would get themselves into) so we joined them in the play room for our morning tea.  We sat at the round plastic table - rest assured it's an adults sized table, we didn't have to pretend to have a teaparty, but it was no where near as sophisticated as the dark wooden tables and low stools in the main cafe area.  The sacrifices you make when you have kids!

There is a huge selection of toys in the playroom, and we enjoyed sitting back for a chat while the boys were occupied (one having his morning nap in the pram, the other checking out the mechanics of a push along toy).  The staff in the cafe will provide table service to you in the playroom, however the room isn't available if there is a seminar or workshop on in that wing of the building, due to the noise level that kids are capable of creating!

Both the playroom and the main cafe are great spots for a mums group catch-up, but if you want to use the playroom with a group of kids it would be an idea to phone ahead to make sure that there isn't a seminar on.

The main menu looked a little hearty for what we were after today, but it did have lots of interesting sounding options and we have previously read great food reviews - check out Rita's Bite - Taste Cafe 

There is a selection of cakes and muffins for morning tea.  Super cheap!  We were each left only $5.50 out of pocket for a large tasty raspberry and white choc muffin and coffee.  A great spot for a mumma on a budget.

The Bahai Centre is a religious centre of learning, and as such (particularly in the kids room) their philosophy and beliefs are on display.  Other than just being on display it is not pressed in any way and we still enjoyed ourselves.  If you are interested, the centre runs children's classes on Thursday afternoon's for kids aged 5 and over.  Anyone is welcome to join these free classes which have a spiritual basis, and teach the virtues of the Bahai faith through music, prayer and story telling.  Contact the centre if you wish to enrol.      

As we were leaving we made a confession to the staff about the broken babycino cup :(  We left a tip on the saucer as compensation, to which the waiter told us not to be silly, dont worry about it!  That was pretty nice of him we thought, but we left the tip all the same.  If only we had known about Babycino Keep Cups!

Mumma Review

Located in the carpark on the corner of Elizabeth and Meville Streets the Farm Gate Market is proving to be a Hobart institution of a Sunday morning.  The growers market has a wide range of fresh, local and seasonal produce - all grown by the traders.  In addition to the fruit and veggies you'll also find eggs, honey, walnuts, seafood, meats, cheese and yoghurt, plants, flowers, bakery goods and artisan items. Plenty to choose from!

Last Sunday morning we were all after one thing - a delicious egg and bacon bap!  And of course the chance to catch up, relax and wander around sampling little delights (like tasty fudge and creamy yoghurt!) while purchasing various must-have items (fresh herbs, olive oil soap, blueberries, fudge/marshmallow on a stick - a necessity according to Al!). 

 
While we shopped the boys enjoyed a ride around the market on their bikes, pushed by their dads, both quietly nursing hangovers (never the same once you are a parent!).  The egg and bacon baps were definitely the main draw card for them, bought from the Farm Gate Market Cafe.  The cafe also does a range of coffee's, and a babycino for $2, but today we opted for fresh juice from the Fresh Juice and Smoothie stall.  Other food on offer from various stalls for immediate consumption include gourmet burgers, seasonal salads, salmon sausages, temaki handrolls and inari. 

You'll find tables under large umbrella's in the centre of the market.  Last week the market was buzzing with people of all ages, and there was high demand for tables, but we didn't have to wait long before a spot was available.  While there are no dedicated baby change facilities there are both male and female public toilets located within the carpark. 

The Farm Gate Market really is a great spot to take the kids of a Sunday morning, catch up with friends and sample the tasty delights that our wonderful island has to offer!

Mumma Review

Machine Laundry Cafe is a brunch/lunch institution in Salamanca Square with both locals and tourists aplenty flocking to it on a daily basis.  We recently enjoyed a weekday brunch while basking in our holiday glory (don't you just love Christmas time in Hobart!) and really felt like tourists as we breezed around Salamanca with bub in tow.  

Once seated inside (a little cool on this particular morning) the service was efficient and friendly.  Booster seats are provided for littlies and whilst it was a little on the shabby side it certainly did the job and the waitress was more than attentive as she helped secure it onto the chair.  Bub was all smiles as we set him up with some morning tea and a selection of little toys from home.

There is a great selection to choose from for both brunch and lunch but on this day I simply couldn't go past the banana & ricotta pancakes with caramel sauce (I did however ask for natural yoghurt instead of the double cream to make myself feel less guilty!).  The pancakes were delicious and as I type this I would quite like some more!!  Hubby thoroughly enjoyed his scrambled eggs on sourdough (and so did bub and I - he he).  There isn't a specific kids menu but half serves are available for most of their dishes.

A great giant chess set is located next to the cafe so the bigger kids can keep themselves amused whilst you enjoy the rest of your time eating tasty food and sipping coffee!  There are also baby change facilities located in Salamanca Square in case of any mishaps.  There is a nice amount of undercover outdoor seating which would be great for a mid-week mother's group catch up's when the weather is warm.  There is also indoor seating but room is a little tighter.

Whilst Machine Cafe has a 'no booking' policy there seems to always been a constant turn-over of tables which, in our experience, means little to no waiting times (a bonus when waiting with littlies!).  All in all a great local spot that welcomes kids and has great food and coffee :)

Mumma Review

We headed up to the Cupping Room in need of a good coffee after enjoying the Hobart Christmas Pageant (there were only so many floats Mumma Al could enjoy watching before her mind wondered off to coffee and food!).  Conveniently located  in Murray Street opposite Chemist Warehouse the Cupping Room was probably the only place in the CBD (apart from Dome Cafe and Pop - which is shut of a Saturday) that could easily accommodate our group of 3 families with 3 toddler boys and equal number of prams. 

As we arrived the place was just warming up with other like minded families retreating there from a morning at the pageant (potentially the most amount of families they have seen in one morning?!).  There were kids and prams aplenty, but still enough room to easily manoeuvre in the huge warehouse style space. 

Unfortunately there are no highchairs, or anything to keep kids amused.  We were also a bit wary of the garage door opening up directly onto the street, should any little person decide on a quick mad dash out the door (however we imagine this door isn't always open when the days aren't as warm and sunny as today was).

The food came out super quick despite the fact that the place was packed.  Apparently they are happy to do some half sized meals for little tummies, but today our boys happily shared some scrambled eggs with their mums.  Raspberry/white choc muffins and a deliciously moist zingy lime/white choc Blondie cake were also thoroughly enjoyed (however not by the bubba's despite them trying to taste a morsel or two!). 

Kel's bubba enjoyed the babycino, but despite him searching far and wide, under the cup, behind the saucer, in the cup, there were no marshmallows to be found.

There has been lots of talk on other blogs about the quality of the coffee and the merits of the "Slayer" coffee machine.  We aren't coffee connoisseurs, merely eager consumers, so we have included a link for any aficionado's to suss out what all the fuss is about...

All in all we really enjoyed the food and coffee.  The Cupping Room is such a convenient city spot for mumma's (and pappa's) with bubs and prams to meet, if only it had a few more kid friendly features it would be perfect for us!
